What Makes a Password Strong?

Password strength is measured by entropy — the amount of randomness or unpredictability. Entropy is determined by two factors: the length of the password and the size of the character set used. The relationship is exponential:

• 8 characters, lowercase only: 26^8 ≈ 200 billion combinations — cracked in seconds by modern hardware
• 12 characters, mixed case + digits: 62^12 ≈ 3.2 × 10^21 combinations — would take centuries
• 16 characters, full character set (94 chars): 94^16 ≈ 3.6 × 10^31 combinations — effectively uncrackable with current technology
• 20 characters, full character set: Considered "Fort Knox" level security

Password Best Practices for Indian Users

• Never reuse passwords: If one account is breached (extremely common in India with frequent data leaks from online retailers and apps), a reused password compromises every account using it.
• Use a password manager: Apps like Bitwarden (free, open source), 1Password, or the built-in Google/Apple password managers store your generated passwords securely and autofill them on login pages.
• Enable 2FA: Two-factor authentication (via Google Authenticator, SMS OTP, or hardware key) adds a second layer of protection. Even if your password is stolen, 2FA prevents unauthorised login.
• Different passwords for critical accounts: Use your strongest, most unique passwords for email, banking, and UPI apps — these are the highest-value targets.
