Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my iPhone photos have the HEIC extension?

Apple uses High-Efficiency Image Container (HEIC) to save storage space without sacrificing visual quality compared to traditional JPGs.

Are my personal photos uploaded to a conversion server?

Absolutely not. The HEIC decoding happens entirely within your web browser for complete privacy.

Will converting HEIC to JPG strip the EXIF metadata (location/date)?

Our local browser conversion attempts to preserve as much original EXIF data as technically possible.

Why is the resulting JPG file larger than the original HEIC?

HEIC uses an advanced compression algorithm that is about 50% more efficient than standard JPG formatting.

Can I view HEIC files natively on a Windows PC?

Not by default; Windows usually requires installing an additional HEVC codec extension, which is why converting to JPG is easier.

What is HEIC Format and Why iPhones Use It

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's proprietary image format, adopted as the default photo format for iPhones starting with iOS 11 in 2017. HEIC images use the HEVC (H.265) codec to achieve up to 50% smaller file sizes compared to JPEG, while maintaining the same or better visual quality. A typical HEIC photo from an iPhone 14 or 15 is around 1–2MB, compared to 3–5MB for an equivalent JPEG. This saves significant iPhone storage space over thousands of photos.

Why HEIC Causes Problems Outside Apple Devices

Despite its technical advantages, HEIC has a serious compatibility problem: it is not universally supported. Most Android devices, Windows PCs (without a paid codec), government portals, email attachments, WhatsApp web, and older software simply cannot open HEIC files. When you transfer photos from your iPhone to a non-Apple device or try to upload them to a government website, you will often encounter an error or the file will appear as a broken image.

  • Windows 10/11: Cannot open HEIC without paying for the "HEVC Video Extensions" codec from the Microsoft Store (₹59).
  • Government portals (UPSC, NTA, IRCTC): Accept only JPG and PNG — never HEIC.
  • Most photo editing software: Older versions of Photoshop, Paint, and similar tools cannot open HEIC files.
  • WhatsApp and social media uploads: Force HEIC conversion before sending, sometimes reducing quality.

HEIC to JPG Conversion: Quality and File Size

When converting HEIC to JPG, you can choose your output quality. A JPG quality of 85–90% is virtually indistinguishable from the original HEIC at normal viewing sizes, while keeping the file size manageable. For government portal uploads, a quality of 70–80% typically achieves the required file size (under 100KB or 200KB) while keeping your face clearly recognisable. Our converter lets you adjust the output quality before downloading.

How to Prevent iPhones from Shooting in HEIC

If you frequently need to share or upload photos to non-Apple platforms, configure your iPhone to shoot in JPG instead: go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. This shoots in JPG/H.264 instead of HEIC/HEVC. The trade-off is approximately 2× the storage usage per photo. Alternatively, use our converter whenever you need to share HEIC photos.

Batch HEIC Conversion

If you have dozens or hundreds of HEIC photos to convert — for example, after transferring a holiday photo collection to Windows — our batch HEIC to JPG converter handles multiple files simultaneously. Select all your HEIC files at once and download a ZIP archive with all converted JPGs. Processing happens entirely in your browser with no upload limits.
