Frequently Asked Questions

How does the EPF contribution structure work?

Both employee and employer contribute 12% of the basic salary plus DA. The employee's entire 12% goes directly to the EPF. The employer's 12% is split: 3.67% goes to EPF and 8.33% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS).

How is EPF interest calculated?

EPF interest is calculated monthly but credited to the account at the end of the financial year. The interest rate is set annually by the government (defaulting to 8.20% currently). It is applied to the running balance at the end of each month.

When can I withdraw my EPF amount?

You can withdraw your entire EPF corpus upon retirement (after age 55 or limit of 58/60 depending on terms) or if you remain unemployed for more than 2 months. Partial withdrawals are allowed for specific reasons like home purchase, marriage, or medical emergencies.

Is EPF withdrawal amount taxable in India?

EPF withdrawals are fully tax-exempt if you have completed 5 years of continuous service. If you withdraw before 5 years, the amount is added to your income and taxed at your applicable slab rate. TDS at 10% is deducted if the withdrawal exceeds ₹50,000 before 5 years.

EPF Calculator: Understand Your Provident Fund Growth

The Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is India's most widely used retirement savings scheme, administered by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Every salaried employee in organisations with 20+ employees earning up to ₹15,000/month is mandatorily enrolled. Both the employee and employer contribute 12% of the Basic Salary + DA each month. The accumulated corpus grows at an interest rate declared by EPFO annually — 8.25% for FY 2023-24. Our EPF Calculator projects your total corpus at retirement.

How EPF Contributions Work

  • Employee Contribution: 12% of Basic Salary + Dearness Allowance (DA) deducted from your salary every month. Goes entirely into the EPF account.
  • Employer Contribution: Also 12% of Basic + DA. However, this is split: 3.67% goes to EPF and 8.33% goes to EPS (Employee Pension Scheme) — up to a maximum of ₹1,250/month (8.33% of the ₹15,000 salary ceiling for EPS).
  • VPF (Voluntary Provident Fund): You can contribute more than the mandatory 12% voluntarily. Additional contributions earn the same EPF interest rate and enjoy the same tax benefits — making VPF one of India's best tax-free investment options.

EPF Interest Rate and How It's Calculated

EPFO declares the interest rate at the end of each financial year. Historical rates: 8.5% (FY 2019-20), 8.5% (FY 2020-21), 8.1% (FY 2021-22), 8.15% (FY 2022-23), 8.25% (FY 2023-24). Interest is calculated monthly on the running balance but credited annually on 31st March. The formula is: Monthly interest = (Opening Balance + Monthly Contribution) × Annual Rate ÷ 12.

Tax Benefits: EEE Status of EPF

EPF enjoys EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status — one of only a few instruments with this triple exemption:

  • Contribution is Exempt: Employee contribution up to ₹1.5 lakh qualifies for Section 80C deduction under the old tax regime.
  • Interest is Exempt: Interest earned on EPF is fully tax-free (up to 9.5% rate; any rate above 9.5% becomes taxable — not relevant at current rates).
  • Withdrawal is Exempt: Withdrawal after 5 continuous years of service is completely tax-free, regardless of amount.

EPF Withdrawal Rules

Full EPF withdrawal is allowed at retirement (age 58), upon permanent disability, or after 2 months of unemployment. Partial withdrawals are permitted for specific purposes: home purchase/construction (after 5 years), medical emergencies (up to 6 months' wages), marriage (after 7 years), and education (after 7 years). Withdrawal before 5 years of continuous service is taxable and subject to TDS.

Checking Your EPF Balance

Check your EPF balance through the EPFO member portal (passbook.epfindia.gov.in), the UMANG app, or by sending an SMS to 7738299899. Your UAN (Universal Account Number) links all your EPF accounts across different employers — activate it at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in.
