Frequently Asked Questions

How is CGPA calculated from SGPA?

CGPA = (Sum of SGPA × Credits for each semester) ÷ Total Credits. Our calculator lets you enter SGPA and credits for each semester and auto-computes your CGPA.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

The most widely accepted formula in India is: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. This is the UGC-recommended formula used by most universities.

Can I calculate my CGPA with varying course credits?

Yes, our CGPA calculator supports credit weightage, allowing you to input different credits for each course to get a precise weighted CGPA.

Does this calculator work for all Indian universities?

Yes. The weighted average CGPA formula and CGPA × 9.5 percentage conversion are standard across most Indian universities including VTU, Anna University, JNTU, Mumbai University, and others.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the GPA for one semester. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the weighted average across all semesters, giving an overall academic performance score.

CGPA to Percentage Calculator: Convert Your Grade Point Average

Many Indian universities use CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) on a 10-point scale to evaluate academic performance. However, employers, graduate schools, and government recruitment boards typically require percentage equivalents on job applications, admission forms, and government exam registration portals. Our CGPA to Percentage Calculator handles conversions for multiple Indian university grading systems accurately.

CGPA Conversion Formulas for Indian Universities

  • CBSE (Class X and XII): Official formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8.5 = 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%. This is the only official formula — CBSE does not endorse any other conversion method.
  • VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka): Percentage = (CGPA – 0.75) × 10. For example, CGPA 8.0 = (8.0 – 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%.
  • Anna University, Tamil Nadu: Percentage = (CGPA / 10) × 100 — i.e., straight multiplication. CGPA 8.5 = 85%.
  • Mumbai University: Percentage = 7.1 × CGPA + 11 (for 7-point scale). For 10-point scale, use CGPA × 10.
  • Most other universities (generic formula): Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 — widely accepted and used by many employers when the university-specific formula is not known.

Why Different Universities Use Different Conversions

Each university designs its own grading scale with different grade cutoffs and GPA calculation methodologies. VTU's formula accounts for the fact that their grading tends to cluster around 7.5–8.5 CGPA, while CBSE's formula is calibrated to their specific grade distribution. There is no universal CGPA-to-percentage conversion — always use your university's official formula when filling official documents.

CGPA for Government Job Applications

Most government job notifications (UPSC, SSC, banking, PSU) specify minimum eligibility as a percentage (e.g., "minimum 60% aggregate in graduation"). If your university uses CGPA, you should include the official conversion formula along with your CGPA in the application and have an official conversion certificate from your university's examination department ready for verification. Some notifications now also explicitly mention that CGPA will be converted using a specified formula.

CGPA vs GPA vs Percentage: International Context

Indian CGPA (10-point scale) is different from the American GPA (4-point scale). To convert Indian CGPA to US GPA for graduate school applications abroad: most American universities use the WES (World Education Services) equivalency, which converts Indian percentage to GPA on a 4-point scale. Generally, 75–100% = 4.0 GPA, 65–74% = 3.0–3.9 GPA, 55–64% = 2.0–2.9 GPA. Many universities have their own equivalency tables — check directly with the admissions office for the correct conversion.
