How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Any Device — Free & Instant

You took a photo on your iPhone, tried to upload it to a government portal, and got an error: *"Invalid file format. Only JPEG files are accepted."* Your photo is saved as a .heic file — a format that Apple introduced in 2017 that most websites, portals, and older software still do not support.

This guide explains what HEIC is, why it causes problems, and how to convert it to JPG on any device in seconds.

What Is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It uses the HEVC (H.265) codec to compress photos to roughly half the size of an equivalent JPEG while maintaining the same visual quality.

The problem: HEIC is an Apple-proprietary format. Windows, Android, and most web services do not natively support it. Government portals, bank websites, and most online forms only accept JPEG.

Why Indian Government Portals Reject HEIC Files

Indian government portals (NTA, IRCTC, NVSP, IBPS, SSC, and others) were built to accept JPEG files. HEIC did not exist when most of these portals were designed, and they have not been updated to support it. When you try to upload a .heic file, the portal either rejects it outright or — worse — accepts it but displays a broken image.

How to Convert HEIC to JPG

Method 1: Online Converter (Fastest — Works on Any Device)

  1. Go to tinytools.in/tools/heic-to-jpg
  2. Upload your HEIC file
  3. Download the converted JPEG
This works on iPhone, Android, Windows, and Mac — no software installation required. The converted file is ready to upload to any portal.

Method 2: Change iPhone Settings (Prevents the Problem)

The best solution is to stop your iPhone from saving photos as HEIC in the first place:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Tap Camera
  3. Tap Formats
  4. Select Most Compatible instead of "High Efficiency"
Your iPhone will now save all new photos as JPEG. Existing HEIC photos will still need to be converted.

Note: JPEG photos are slightly larger than HEIC (roughly 2× the file size). If storage is a concern, keep HEIC enabled and convert only when needed.

Method 3: AirDrop to Mac (Mac Users)

If you have a Mac:

  1. AirDrop the HEIC photo from your iPhone to your Mac
  2. Open it in Preview
  3. Go to File → Export
  4. Choose JPEG as the format
  5. Adjust quality if needed and save

Method 4: Windows 10/11 (Built-in)

Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC files if you install the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. However, to convert to JPEG:

  1. Open the HEIC file in Photos app
  2. Click the three-dot menu → Save as
  3. Choose JPEG format
Alternatively, use our HEIC to JPG online converter — it is faster and requires no installation.

Method 5: Google Photos (Android or iPhone)

If your photos are backed up to Google Photos:

  1. Open Google Photos on any device
  2. Find the photo
  3. Tap the three-dot menu → Download
  4. Google Photos downloads HEIC files as JPEG automatically

HEIC vs JPEG: Quality Comparison

| Aspect | HEIC | JPEG |
|--------|------|------|
| File size | ~50% smaller | Standard |
| Quality | Equal or better | Standard |
| Compatibility | Apple devices only | Universal |
| Portal support | Rarely accepted | Always accepted |
| Editing support | Limited | Universal |

For everyday use on Apple devices, HEIC is excellent. For sharing, uploading to portals, or using on non-Apple devices, JPEG is the only practical choice.

After Converting: Resize for Portal Requirements

Once you have a JPEG file, you may still need to resize it to meet portal file size requirements:

  • Under 50KB (most government portals): Use Resize Image to 50KB
  • Under 20KB (some admission forms): Use Resize Image to 20KB
  • Passport size (35×45mm): Use Passport Size Photo Maker

Common Questions About HEIC Conversion

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

Slightly. HEIC uses more efficient compression than JPEG, so converting to JPEG at the same visual quality produces a larger file. However, the quality difference is invisible to the human eye at standard viewing sizes.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?

Our HEIC to JPG tool currently converts one file at a time. For batch conversion, use the Mac Preview method (select multiple files → Export as JPEG) or a desktop application like iMazing HEIC Converter (free).

Why does my HEIC file show as .jpg on iPhone but fail to upload?

Some apps and portals check the actual file format (magic bytes), not just the extension. A file named photo.jpg that is actually HEIC internally will be rejected. Use our converter to create a genuine JPEG file.

Will converting HEIC to JPG remove the Live Photo?

Yes. Live Photos (the short video component) are stored separately and are not included in the converted JPEG. Only the still image is converted.

My HEIC file is very large even after converting to JPG. Why?

iPhone photos are typically 12–48 megapixels. A full-resolution iPhone photo converted to JPEG can be 3–8MB. For portal uploads, you need to resize it after converting. Use Resize Image to 50KB after conversion.
